Delivering STEP data to the Norwegian Army

Published 1997-10-28
In connection with a large combat vehicle delivery to the Norwegian Army, Hägglunds Vehicle, the internationally known Swedish company specializing in manufacturing defense materials, has convinced the Norwegians to take part in a very timely project: The sharing of STEP data as a bid to cut time and costs when exchanging small parts and large vehicles.

For Hägglunds Vehicle, the search for standards in this area brought them to EPM Technology. EPM's STEP-compliant software EXPRESS Data Manager is used to describe all kinds of product data, making the data into useful information for partners, subcontractors and customers. The Norwegian Army, represented by HFK (Hærens Forsyningskommando, the Norwegian Army Material Command) is one significant customer, ordering 104 combat vehicles valued at NOK 2.3 billion and due to be delivered by 2002.

"Using EXPRESS Data Manager is a great step forward for us," says project manager Roger Ljung of the LOTS project at Hägglunds Vehicle. The project deals with establishing standards in product data and information meant for technical publications and manuals.

Sharing data

"We now have a system that separates data from applications. Controlling thousands of detailed parts and the re-use of product data saves millions of SEK," Ljung says. "This makes it possible for different departments of the company to share the same data, e.g. design, manufacturing and logistics support. It also simplifies the communication and interpretation of data with our suppliers, subcontractors and customers," concludes Ljung.
