IAI/STEP solutions to the Building Industry

Important steps taken towards the world-wide building industry

Published 1997-03-10
At present time EPM Technology and Concad GmbH is working together to launch complete software developing tools for the IAI community and version 2.0 of the industry standards. The systems are using the innovative technology developed by EPMT, the EXPRESS Data Manager product line and Concad's IAI Toolbox 1.0. The systems will support both IAI and existing STEP standards, such as AP225, AP228 and AP230.

Innovative technology

Concad, founded in 1989, is a well known leader in the area of technical data systems integration area, with a highly focus to the building industry. The company developed the version 1.0 Toolbox for the IAI standards and is also a contributor to various application protocol in the ISO 10303 standards. Other business is performed in data exchange, primarily in the central European region.

- EPM Technology provides a complimentary technology to the IAI Toolbox that is needed to support the next generation of IAI implementation, and to integrate applications in a STEP database environment. Says Bernd Ingenbleek, President and founder of Concad GmbH.

- We are very pleased that EPMT and Concad can co-operate in the area of developing commercial tools for implementation of our most important industry standards. Feedback from real-life implementations is the only way to make better and industry-accepted standards, says Richard Junge ISO/TC184/SC4 /WG3 convenor and responsible for data modeling in IAI.

A breakthrough

- The working relations between our two companies represent a significant breakthrough for the building industry, says Kjell A. Bengtsson, senior vice-president of EPMT. - And it will give positive repercussions. Concad's domain expertise in the building sector may be utilised in other related industry markets to provide the best and most cost-effective Express based solutions.

IAI standard programmers will be allowed to use the upgraded version 2.0 standard with the familiar function call of Concad's library, a new viewer, the instance browser and the Standard Data Access Interface (SDAI) - ISO 10303-22 for sharing of object data. Optionally, the complete product range from EPM Technology can be plugged in to provide functionality for data modelling (Express-G), generic SDAI/EDMinterface, Express object database and other functions from the EXPRESS Data Manager will be offered.

Covering the life cycle in the building industry

IAI's mission is to integrate the AEC/FM industry. This is done by specifying Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) as a universal language to improve the communication, productivity, delivery time, cost and quality throughout the design, construction, operation and maintenance life cycle of buildings.
