The purpose of this document is to provide strategic and tactical guidance for the adoption by industry of a common standard-based information backbone. This will enable interoperability for product definition data across the aerospace industry and throughout the product life cycle.

EDIG recommends that AIA Member companies and Suppliers transition to a Standards-based interoperability solution utilizing PLCS (ISO 10303-239) and its associated DEXs.

This article is based on the work of the LOTAR project,which,through the European Body for the development of global Aerospace standards (ASD-STAN), aims to develop a standardfor long term retention of digital aircraft data. Project members include BAE SYSTEMS, Airbus, EADS, Dassault Aviation, SNECMA and MTU, and is supported by the ProSTEP association.The European industry is working closely with its US counterpart,the AIA to promote a global consensus, and with the PDES Inc.
