POSC/Caesar Project solution:

Published 1997-10-23
As a result of the POSC/Caesar project for the standardisation of the sharing and exchange of data, the Norwegian oil companies Saga Petroleum, Statoil and Norsk Hydro have started a «Take-up» implementation project called "VÅV". The VÅV project name relates to the multi-billion NOK oil & gas fields called Varg, Åsgard and Visund.

One of the objectives of this project is to develop and implement a Data Warehouse architecture based on the POSC/Caesar Product Model, involving a consortium of, among others, IBM, EuroSTEP, Intergraph and EPM Technology. EPM Technology provides its EXPRESS Data Manager technology and services to the main partners.

The POSC/Caesar Project is a data standardisation initiative to reduce life-cycle costs and development time of oil and gas facilities. It was initiated in 1993 as a strategic research program within the Norwegian oil & gas industry. In 1994 the project expanded and became more general towards focusing on standards for electronic sharing/exchange of data, and started to cooperate with POSC. Today, the POSC/Caesar project is sponsored by Aker Maritime, Kværner, Brown & Root, DNV, Hydro, Saga Petroleum, Statoil, Elf, IBM, Intergraph, Oracle and Lloyd's Register. The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

VÅV - a STEP/Express based Data Warehouse

The main objectives of the VÅV Data Warehouse are to implement tools for the transfer of data from legacy systems to the POSC/ Caesar database, to verify and complete the POSC/Caesar Product Model and to validate the data transferred to the Warehouse. Within the VÅV project the Data Warehouse is defined as «an architecture that enables different applications to process the same, integrated data». The VÅV Data Warehouse comprises the following components:
  • Database for operational lifecycle data
  • Tools for data exchange
  • Mechanisms for quality assurance and control
  • Open user interface (API) between applications and data
  • Tools for end users and integration with other systems
  • System management tools (security, user definitions etc.)
