SINTEF uses Express in new GIS standardPublished 1997-10-23
The Norwegian Map Authority currently holds the secretariat for the evolving ISO/TC211: Geographic Information/Geomatics standard, in which the research institute SINTEF plays an important part. The objective is to make an international standard for the exchange of GIS data in a manner which allows electronic maps/map data to be transferred between different GIS applications and hardware platforms, as well as to be integrated with other functional systems.
Through implementing ISO-TC211, the Norwegian Mat Authority moves from the old SOSI format to Express. The standard CEN/TC287: Geographic Information, uses Express, and SINTEF has chosen OMT as the graphics language, and ISO-IDL (CORBA based interface) and Express as its lexical language for ISO-TC211 in 1997. The Norwegian Map format «SOSI» is already converted into an Express Model. SINTEF is Europe's fourth largest research unit, employing more than 2000 people. Regarding GIS, the institute works with GIS object-technology, GIS multimodelling and also assists in the development of the ISO standard TC211 Geographic Information/Geomatics. |
